Game Fun

What is game fun? Fun is a dopamine in our brains firing when presented with a new situation to learn from. Each games can teach us different skills. Type one games are about thinking. Type two games are more about reflex based skills.

type one games-

Chess teaches us strategy and foresight.

Civilisation teaches systemic analysis and resource management.

Poker teaches deception and reading peoples lies.

type two games-

Mario teaches precise input patterens.

street fighter teaches combo memorisation.

shooter games teach sharp reflexes.

Games are fundamentally a creative art that gives us the ability to learn. I think that the topic of game fun ties in with the reading from last week, Game Decisions. If the challenge doesn't match the skill level there will be no fun, a player will get bored.

We learned 8 different types of fun, Sensation, Fantasy, Narrative, Challenge, Fellowship, Discovery, Expression, Submission. Games contain several kinds of fun varying in quantities. We also looked at the four types of players. Achievers, Explorers, Socialisers and killers. Each players will react and engage with different types of fun very differently. This shows how game experiences can be so different and varying. This is a good thing though, because there is so many different types of games there is something for everyone to try.

  1. Hello Philippa,
I have been reading through your blog about game fun an what is fun general and I keep hearing the word dopamine but I never really got understanding of it, You explained it perfectly well so it's in our brains when we learn something viewing situation on your brain just keeps remembering the fun and dopamine is a really addictive definition to what it is and I like the games that you have pulled like chess teaches all strategy I have been wanting to learn about chess ball is just too much brain usage to use so I would be trying to learn the tutorials of how to play chess and I have downloaded online app games for chess as well I have never heard about civilization teaches systemic like poker I all of those stuff about Street Fighter shooter games it all comes down to how we perceive games the fundamentals of games and game decisions is that each game has their own unique way which is what you kind of said and they all teach a different type of strategy and I don't think it should be fair to compare them with each other because they're all different I will cheque your source of what you have been reading “kinds of fun.”
